The demand for non-extraction, non-braces orthodontics is growing. The concerns over relapse after treatment with braces and the use of permanent retainers has caused many patients, parents and even dental professionals to question the long-term efficacy of orthodontics with fixed appliances (braces). Myofunctional Research Co (MRC) have developed a complete range of myofunctional orthodontic appliances that not only treat malocclusion without braces, but also offer other benefits such as improved facial development and better stability.
The first MRC Clinic opened in 2010 and offered a new concept in practice management that delivered myofunctional orthodontic treatment more cost effectively to children of all socioeconomic groups. With many of these clinics opening world-wide and as a result of the high demand for this system, MRC has developed the Myobrace Certified Provider program. This course will demonstrate how to be part of this program, and how to integrate MRC’s appliances and comprehensive educational materials into your practice.
This will assist you in profitably providing myofunctional orthodontic treatment to all children from 5-15 years of age. Informed parents are increasingly concerned that the only way to ensure their child’s orthodontic results are maintained for life is to use permanent retainers or to expect relapse and potentially the need for future re-treatment. Add to this the extremely high chance of root damage of up to 4mm of loss of root length. (Am J Orthod Dentofacial Orthop2011; 139:e495-e503)
Myofunctional orthodontics is a viable and effective treatment method that provides long-term benefits to both the patient and the doctor. This course will show how you can profit from this change.
SOFT TISSUE DYSFUNCTION
Mouth breathing, tongue thrusting, incorrect swallowing and other myofunctional habits and their effect on:
• Malocclusion
• Poor facial development
• Relapse
• TMJ Disorder
How the dynamics of form and function affect the dentition, skeletal structures and the face.
Soft tissues control dental position and should be considered in conjunction with any treatment.
Comparison of the normal with the dysfunctional:
NORMAL CLASS I, NORMAL SWALLOW, NORMAL DENTAL DEVELOPMENT, REVERSE SWALLOW,
MOUTH BREATHING.
Why no Orthodontic treatment will be stable without treatment of Soft Tissue Dysfunction.
Diagnosis and treatment of Soft Tissue Dy Dysfunction is the responsibility of the General Dentist and Pedodontist.
Arch Development and Myobrace™
Arch form correction with the Farrell Bent Wire System. (Information in the MRC Library on www.myobrace.com)
The BENT WIRE Appliance System (BWS™) – no more acrylic Phase 1 appliances.
Inadequacies of the current appliance systems for treating Soft Tissue Dysfunction, in particular,
Schwartz/Sagittal, Bionator, and Clark Twin Block.
The MYOBRACE™ is then used to hold development and to align the dentition and the mandible.
Rapid alignment is achieved. Continued MYOBRACE™ use is needed.
Minimal use of fixed brackets can be implemented if required.
Usually not used.
Case Selection
Indication of cases to start using the MYOBRACE™.
TMJ System™
Immediate and effective diagnosis and treatment for TMJ Disorder.
Diagnosis and treatment of TMJ/D in minimal chair time with 2 splints, for day and night.
Intracapsular – treats joint pain and dysfunction.
Extra capsular – treats muscle pain and dysfunction.
The TMJ-MBV™
For mouth breathers and snorers.
Treatment Goals
1 – Breathing through the nose
2 – Lips together at rest
3 – Correct tongue position
4 – No mentalis activity on swallowing
5 – Optimal facial development
6 – Class I occlusion
7 – Straight teeth
8 – No retainers required
You must have a clear picture of what you are trying to achieve with each patient to determine treatment success.
Treatment Actions
1 – Use the MRC appliance 1 hour each day plus while sleeping
2 – Regular daily use is essential
3 – MRC appliance stays in each night
4 – Myofunctional exercises at least once per day
5 – Mouth closed with MRC appliance not in use
6 – Tongue resting in upper jaw all the time
7 – Regular visits to clinic
8 – Good nutritional and hard diet.
The first treatment goal is to have the tongue naturally resting in the maxilla with the lips together at rest all the time.
